On Saturday night I watched the film Bridge of Spies with my big bro Mike and sis in law Liz. In one scene, as the Berlin wall undergoes hasty construction, an American grad student bicycles through a gap to the east side to see his girlfriend. He urges her to leave now, because they may not be able to cross to the west if they wait a day longer. But when they reach his crossing point they meet solid wall.

We’ve all experienced broken relationships. Some seem past mending. It’s as if no matter what we do, or say—or don’t do/say—we hit the damned wall. Expletive intentional. Broken relationships can be hellish things. (more…)
